review 1: I'm not sure how many ways I can say I like Brubaker's Crime Noir Comics. Each of them has been somewhere between good and great, and each for similar but distinct reasons. Brubaker tells a good crime story, but he's not just telling the same story over and over again. This was fairly different, about a 'regular' guy that gets pulled into an ugly life by a woman. The twists and turns are surprising but logical, and there's a character that is fascinating in a sort of Donnie Dark kind of way. It shouldn't work, but it really does.
review 2: Not as intriguing to me as the other books in this series, but a necessary part I suppose. This tale slips into the life of Jake, who is the author of the comic strip we saw in the first Criminal, and the designer of Tra... morecy Lawless' fresh new ID in Lawless. He lives a secluded life, after having been falsely accused of killing his wife by a detective with a chip on his shoulder. Jake is content or at least complacent with the life he's left, and would remain that way, had he not stumbled across what seemed to be a damsel in distress in a local diner. In stepping to her aid, Jake embarks on what can be classified as a bad night, but progresses into a bad series of nights, full of lies, mystery, and a little psychosis...Nice filler.. less
