review 1: A direct followup to Volume 2 (Lawless), the story takes the hero Lawless and ties him up into an even uglier situation than the previous, as he tries to solve a series of murders of 'untouchables.' Lawless isn't much of a detective, and events manage to take several turns for the worse in almost absurdly bad situations, but all of it carries the noir overtones the series is known for. There's an undertone of discontent and despair at escaping a bad situation. The story takes a couple of coincidental turns that are a bit farther out than anything else in the series, but it all comes together in a powerful climax. Continuing good work from Brubaker and Phillips.
review 2: Although THE SINNERS, the fifth volume in Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips love letter to gri
... moretty crime stories, meets the high standard set by previous installments, I can't help but find it a tad boilerplate after the psychological thriller that was BAD NIGHT.Tracy Lawless (here looking more than ever like Duke Nukem sans glasses) is trying to get out from under crime lord Sebastian Hyde's thumb after getting under it in a previous Criminal book, LAWLESS. Here he's tasked with solving the riddle of why made men all over town are getting killed, and why no one is taking credit. He has to stay one step ahead of his boss, the police, every other criminal organization in town and a burly military investigator determined to get Lawless back on the battlefield. Nevermind Lawless's own self-doubts.Although the Criminal stories take place in an overlapping world and feature many of the same characters, THE SINNERS is as close to a true sequel as the series has approached. It's better than most other comics out there, but it's not the best of its own series. less

Each volume of Criminal is like a stand-alone contemporary noir movie. This is perhaps the best one.

Superb noir from the amazing team of Brubaker and Phillips!

It was good, but not near as good as the first four trades.
