review 1: I've only read a smattering of science fiction in my life, but after getting an offer for one volume in this series at a hefty discount -- maybe free -- I thought it might be a good treadmill read. I was right, and now I think I'm hooked. The first book was completely engaging, and I love a postapocalyptic story anyway. I don't have enough sci-fi under my belt to compare, but I think this was well written (except for the constant use of further instead of farther) and it kept me wanting to turn the page. Looking forward to the next one.

... moreaving point to the whole thing is the author does indeed do something different, he focuses on losers. So many stories have the diamond-in-the-rough characters where through adversity they become unstoppable juggernauts of martial prowess. Not so these guys. They start pathetic and while certainly they become more, they're still pretty much sad aspects of humanity. Which frankly makes the story more endearing. Rather like a "Napolean Dynamite" of world-ending, alien-invasion stories. You never feel like you want to root for the guy because they're so uncomfortably real, but in the end you're glad they make it. less
