review 1: If I had read this book when I was 18 I would have said that I wanted to be like Maggie ;strong and devoted . Now that I am in my 30s...I hate seeing how strong women like her fade away just like that...after going through so much. I hate seeing beautiful people with beautiful life, beautiful families and beautiful love just dissipate into ordinariness, into the common realities of life. Staying on when the marriage has long ended would have made their lives even more tortorous but they had so much to look forward to during their "empty nest" stage where they could enjoy each other's company again. This is the first of Elizabeth Noble's books that I have read....I'd say I hv just found another favorite author. Even though its painful to read about some painful realities o... moref adult life in her works, its enlightening and empowering at the same time. I love Elizabeth Noble's works and will be reading more of her books. Thanks for marvellous story telling E.N.
review 2: This book started out so heartbreakingly sad. I struggled to get through it and on several occasions put it down and swore it off. I even had to have a "happy book" to offset the deep sadness that the first half of this book delivered. Much like the Barret family, I too began to feel hope and sense of positive change with the introduction of Kate. This character brings an almost Marry Poppins type love and patience to this family. Elizabeth Noble has delivered some of the most real and raw emotion that I have read in a while. This book to me at first was a struggle but now I am completely in love and will read this again! less
