review 1: This is a pretty decent book. The non-spoiler part of this review will be this: If you don't like characters that are seemingly paragons of virtue and have a tendency to go all one-man-army on a situation this might not be the book for you. I have read books that were much, much worse about this so on a scale of 1-Rambo I'd give this one a 6. Just about the only part of the book I had issue with was the very end. The main character goes on this Rambo killing spree taking over a pirate ship and cruise liner all on his own. The only saving grace here is that the author took pains to point out how relatively unreliable the crew is and how they lack discipline. So while it is a little unbelievable, it's believable enough that I'm not cringing the entire time. The space combat ... moreisn't too bad. Some things kinda threw me off. Like visible lasers being fired which seems pretty stupid. All in all, good book. Sucks you in enough that you don't mind the Rambo escapades at the end.
review 2: Great military space opera about a young fellow going to the space Navy because of student debts. I rarely read indie books, because most of them are either badly written or full of mistakes, or in many cases, both. But this little gem thankfully stands out like a holo beacon of light.What I liked :- Great premise- Very good editing for an indie-novel- very intense showdown- fun writing style and good flow- understandable character that I wanted to root forWhat I didn't like :- long-ish boot camp sequence in the middle of the story that's just like current US Army boot camps(Isn't this supposed be hundred years in the future ? No innovation in training recruits ? Hard to believe.)- not very original and no new technologyRecommended for everyone who wants to read a well-told space opera story. less
