review 1: The House at Sea’s End by Elly Griffiths is the 3rd book in the Ruth Galloway mystery series set on the Norfolk coast of England. The rugged coastline and turbulent weather play compelling roles in the series. When a cliff eroding into the sea reveals long-buried bodies, Ruth is excited to return to work in professional forensic archaeology, but she struggles to find a babysitter (aka “child minder”). She’s more than eager to excavate the site, but also stricken by guilt that she’s not properly tending her new daughter Kate. Throughout the story, Ruth is overwhelmed by the challenge of juggling single motherhood, her university career, and solving a criminal case. Add to this the awkwardness of her secret relationship with Detective Chief Inspector Harry Nelson,... more who wants to be part of his daughter Kate’s life, even though he’s already happily married with teenage daughters. A friend from Ruth’s past comes to stay for a few weeks, reawakening painful memories for Ruth. Tatjana is critical of Ruth’s enthusiasm for work, feeling that Ruth’s attention should be focused on Kate. The process of identifying the bodies on the beach uncovers a wartime crime; a few old soldiers still alive want to keep their secret. Ruth and Harry are persistent following up on clues, even when a big storm threatens their safety. The details of Operation Lucifer are inspired by invasion scares from English wartime history.
review 2: Perhaps the best so far of the series. Unmarried Dr. Ruth Galloway now has a four-months-old daughter called Kate Scarlet. The father of said child is Detective Chief Inspector Harry Nelson as a result of a one-night stand. Harry's wife Michelle seems to be unaware of this but a bunch of other people suspect that that's the case.Six bodies turn up buried on the Norfolk coast. They prove to be six German soldiers who were murdered in 1940. Two very old men happen to die within days of each other. It was not a coincidence.A German journalist who is looking into these deaths is murdered in the present day.Danger threatens Ruth Galloway who is having problems adjusting to the loss of freedom caused by having a baby. But she and Nelson and his crew are on the case. Rather tricky investigating 70 year old murders and finding a connection to the present goings-on. less
