review 1: This could have been a good book. What ruined a potentially good story, for me, was the overuse of similes (some of which made no sense). It's almost like they were thrown in here and there for no rhyme or reason. Another thing was that the main character appeared with her mother in the beginning of the story then the mother disappeared and we didn't hear about her again.Nor did we hear much about the main character's life outside of the restaurant setting. And what would have really added to the book would have been a few of the recipes, either interspersed or at the end of the book. The book was recommended to me by someone who loves to cook, as I do. If you are not interested in cooking I don't think this book would hold your interest.

... moreister writes lyrically of foods, flavors, textures and smells. She has created for us a modern version of Tita, the heroine of Laura Esquival's Like Water For Chocolate. Lillian sees the world and the people around it through a 6th sense- a food sense- that allows her to know what dishes, spices, recipes to offer others in the way of solace, inspiration, motivation, perspective. Unlike Tita, these emotions escape her in her personal life and don't get poured out with her chocolate. Now that the appetizer is served, dear readers, please pick up the book to enjoy the remaining courses. Bon Appétit!l less
