review 1: I don't think the subsequent books in this series can be stand-alone novels because the over-arching plot is still being dealt with and in fact has not concluded even at the end of this novel. We first meet Alastor in the previous book and know that he is one of Sutekh's (God of Chaos) sons. He is the second born son and of the four sons of Sutekh only he and Dagan shared the same biological mother. Sutekh fathered four boys, sending them away to be raised by different families with the exception of Dagan whom he kept in the underworld. Alastor was raised privileged and it was hard for him to accept his biological lineage when he is called by Sutekh to serve as a soul reaper. He is very loyal to his brothers and has the male chivalry long lost by modern time equality. Naph... moreré is a daughter of Aset, Sutekh's enemy, but she has not taken first blood because she didn't want to submit to a life of servitude, most importantly, a life as a killer. However, as fate would have it, her defiance sends her towards the path she tried desperately to avoid albeit under a different controller. When Alastor and Naphré first see each other, it is love-at-first-sight. The chemistry is there and the characters are well aware of them. The story starts out with a bang and it seemed to have the potential to continue on, but it started to drag towards the middle and end of the book for me. I guess, we knew what was eventually going to happen (HEA) so all of the events that took place in between were not really dire or disconcerting. The difference between the first book and the second was that in the first book a lot of information was revealed. Because this book revolved around the H/h with very little interaction from the other characters in the book, it wasn't as interesting. The over-arching plot is on-going and we get glimpses, but nothing solid as to who or what is behind the betrayal of Sutekh's youngest son. I own the entire series so I will be reading the following books, but this installment almost put me to sleep.Narrator:Savannah RichardsPerformance: 4/5After I set the narration to 2x speed the book was easier to listen to. Savannah Richards reads this novel really slow so if you can't adjust the speed of your device, you may find her reading pace to be lulling or annoying. Other than the speed issue, she did a good job with the narration.
review 2: 3-3.5 stars. This is the second book in Eve Silver's 'Otherkin' series and, IMO, didn't quite measure up to 'Sins of the Heart'. While it's evident that Silver has an plan for how this series is going to play out, this book felt a lot like filler and (I don't think) we gained a lot of important insight into the overall story. This book focuses on Alastor Krayl, the second of the four soul reaper sons of Sutekh. In the last book, we learned that the youngest son, Lokan, has been murdered and the three remaining brothers want to avenge his death and bring him back. On the hunt for clues into his brothers death, Alastor crosses paths with Naphré, a former Daughter of Aset and assassin extraordinaire. Apparently Naphré is of some interest to more than one god of the Underworld and she and Alastor team up in a sense to get some answers....I have to say that I found the romance between Alastor and Naphré very unsatisfying - they had very little chemistry and it took an inordinate amount of time to build up to anything interesting. Also, I found there was less dialogue and action in this book than in the first. Nevertheless, I'm still going to continue with this series and hope that sexy pirate brother Mal's story is more up to the calibre of Dagan's in SotH. less
