review 1: It always felt a little wrong to love PREACHER.It's so purposefully ugly (in this volume, just for starters, we get anal rape, beastiality, child pornography... not to mention the inbred, retarded descendant of Jesus Christ) that you can't help but shake your head with each new excess. But like the best friend who's always needling you, writer Garth Ennis is only trying to provoke a reaction - to actually be offended by any of the gratuitously taboo content would be to fall right into his trap. Knowing that the writer is gleefully trying to piss off the readership might be enough in itself to convince many people to steer clear, but truth is: they'd be missing out on a damn fun ride.Forget all the pretension to religious allegory, it's just Ennis trying to push your butt... moreons. At its heart, PREACHER is just a kick-ass revenge quest ala Peckinpah or Tarantino. The fornicating, foul-mouthed anti-heroes are oddly likeable and the villains are so depraved that you can't wait to see them inevitably dispatched in the goriest possible manner. The understated yet expressive art of Steve Dillon, a longtime favorite, is the perfect counterpoint to the over-the-top mayhem. It's definitely not for the squeamish or the politically correct, but if you're hardy enough to give it a chance, you just might find that you've stumbled onto a modern comics masterpiece.
review 2: Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy are back for Round Two of Ennis' bloody Preacher masterpiece. With Jesse and Tulip enjoying some quality time following their escape, they head to California and reunite with Cassidy. As the gang looks into the possible murder of Cassidy's girlfriend, the mysterious Herr Starr arrives to take control of the Grail organization - seeking to make Jesse its Second Coming. Both sides find themselves in the middle of a massive sex party, leading to Cassidy's mistaken kidnapping. As Jesse and Tulip mount a rescue, Starr contends with the bloated Allfather, the indestructible Cassidy, and the inbred "Messiah." Everything hits the fan when the Saint of Killers arrives, leaving the Grail in Starr's hands and the gang back out on the road. The tome concludes with Cassidy's tale as he explains his history to Jesse. The action gets more violent, the plot gets stranger, and Herr Starr continues to be dumped upon by the pen of Garth Ennis. An okay second vaolume; we'll see what the third one brings. less

Entertaining but not quite like the first volume. I enjoyed Cassidy's origin story.

How long this took to read is no indication of how much I enjoyed it.
