review 1: I picked up the Raven trilogy on a whim because I was in the mood for a Viking themed story. After reading this first volume however, reading the rest is not going to be as carefree as I had hoped. The writing is not bad, but the sheer amount of time spent on battles and travelling is tedious. I appreciate the difficulty a life of travel and battles may present for a writer in such abundance, but it could have been spruced up with much more generous character development. I enjoyed what I read and while the battles certainly could be exciting, they feel too much of a chore to really savor. My biggest complaint so far with this series is the characters. I found myself liking them and yet, incredibly frustrated that we were always kept at arms length from really knowing who ... morethey were. They were too flat, too remote for me to really identify with. Despite the fact that they are all battle hardened surely they must have deeper depths. I also have a problem with how readily Raven accepts his new life and partakes of the violence. It gives one the impression he is moldable and not wholly his own person, as if there is no individual will, or at least, not a very strong one. Which is a pity because the clashing of wills between Raven and his Viking comrades might have proven very interesting. All in all it's an ok book but reading my way through the rest of the series hopefully proves less clunky than the first volume.
review 2: I received this book from a first reads giveaway. If you are a fan of historical adventures, then this is for you. Full of action from the start, it is the story of a Viking raid on England and the aftermath when the ships become stranded because of a storm. The description of the violence can be quite gruesome at times and I doubt that the language used is historically accurate, but this helps to make it an easy read with some humour. This is the first part of a trilogy and I look forward to learning more about the main character Raven. less
