review 1: The protagonist, Skip, has run from the foster care system and is living on the streets. He becomes a friend with an older homeless man named Billy. When war breaks out, they try to leave the war ravaged city. Sheltered in the library, they find a young boy, Max, whom they take with them. As they find refuge in an old amusement park, they meet Tia, a teenage mother, and her child. There are others who have survived: gangs and soldiers who plague their lives. Even though homeless in a time of war, this group has a sense of hope for a future together. This book has a humanistic view of what holds people together and shows how war can tear society apart. It is an exciting and compelling story from an award-winning author in Australia.
review 2: Beautiful. This boo
... morek was so beautifully written that I forgot I was reading. Simplicity all over complexity--that is how this book was written. Millard tried to unveil the innocence of a child's mind before the readers, allowing us to see how a disastrous thing as the war may be interpreted in a child's mind. It also conveys how we might find a family and a home in a stranger's company. I can't find any other word to describe this with other than "beautiful". It didn't need too much words to tell a story, but you'll get in its world the whole time you're reading it. Billy, Skip, Sam and Sixpence (okay, and Tia, too) had a wonderful chemistry being together that you'd want them never be separated ever. And I'd love how amidst the destructive war they found refuge in an amusement park, specifically at a horror house! Oh well. I recommend this to everyone who's bearing the complexities of this changing world. less
