review 1: . It a pretty good story and didn't seem too long at all with 310 pages. There were a couple points in the story that were a little predictable, but not over the top enough for me to walk away from it. I always liked Korman’s writing and this one doesn't fail. It is easy to read and Jax is a likable character. A little sad at the end when he has to wipe his memory off his friends mind; reminded me of ‘Men in Black’ with Will Smith. 2/3 into the story it picks up pace and keeps you turning the pages; which is always good. Korman makes this hypnotic story pretty believable. There are funny moments in the book too.
review 2: Just relax, you are falling under my spell...a book about a child hypnotist? Yup, sign me up!I was touch and go on th
... moree whole premise of this book at first but Gordon Korman definitely taps into the 12 year old mind and delivers a roller coaster ride of thrills. This is a quick read and plops the reader right in the middle of the action from the very beginning. I liked the flow and ebb of this book overall. The characters are great and definitely fit the mold of the middle school child with all the non-problems that come along with them. There are some things about the book that may cause an itch for the adult reader. First, the parents are very fringe throughout the whole story with very little interaction, but then when they do interact it seems very hard to believe. Second, the main character will seem some what clueless from the adult perspective as all the ins-and-outs unfold. I know I found my self shaking my head and wondering things like, 'Are you kidding me?!' and this is only magnified when put in contrast to the independence all the characters display as 'city kids'. In the end these are issues adults will notice, but will probably not rate a blip on a middle schooler's radar.Overall, good read and this would be an excellent recommendation for children that are tired of gods and goddesses, but still want the action and adventure. less
