review 1: I have been reading and studying for my class on Women and Religion. This means I have been learning lots of new things, but my brain hasn't done this much work for a long time. After completing my midterm exam, I needed a break. Ms Burrowes provided me with a wonderful change of pace.I have stated before that I read romance because I usually don't have to think too much, the stories I choose are lots of fun and a guaranteed happy ending is wonderful. I got everything I wanted in The Soldier. If you read romance and have not yet read any of Burrowes romances, I suggest that you fix that as soon as possible. You won't be disappointed.
review 2: I really enjoyed The Soldier. Burrowes did a great job of building the love story of Emmeline, Devlin and young Br
... moreonwyn. Her character's portrayals of serious emotional issues shows great insight and empathy. The Earl's struggles with what would now be recognized as post-traumatic stress disorder and with his mother's "rejection" at a young age paints a clear picture of a man who, while quite wealthy, is haunged by major emotional issues and must battle his feelings of being unworthy of love.Emmeline struggles with the same insecurity as Devlin, but for very different reasons -- she considers herself (and this is reinforced by almost all who know her) to be a fallen woman and refuses to allow herself joy or love or even to embrace motherhood, so she and Devlin are well suited because with their severe flaws only each one can really heal each other. The descriptions of Bronwyn (Winnie) acting out by running away and hiding in reaction to the many comings and goings of the people she loves is also truly portrayed with great insight. The sub-plot of the Napoleonic wars was well illustrated -- it added a different dimension to the plot than is usually found in Regency novels. My problem with this book was the amount of physical affection the men bestowed upon each other -- it seems out of character for the time (although I am not a scholar of the period) and it almost bordered on an m/m theme -- although I am sure that wasn't the author's intention. Wealthy men of this time were not demonstrative, they did not hug, or hold onto each other around the waist or kiss each other -- that seems very out of character for the period to me.Otherwise Burrowes is a great story teller and I plan to read more of her books. less

I liked this book better. The romance was developed well and Devlin is impossible not to love.

Like Devlin but wish there had been a little more. I figured out her secret too early.

Devlin is alright, but some parts of this story really dragged on.
