review 1: Actual rating: 3.5This volume was a little bit slower in terms of storyline - it was mostly backstory, which of course, is important... but I was craving the titan killing bad-assery! The parenthesis of the volume (beginning and end) were pretty awesome. And the thing I found most helpful with the middle back story section was being able to better identify some of the other characters. There are so many minor characters that in the chaos of the Titan attacks, I couldn't really tell who was who anymore, especially between Reiner and Jean because they look practically identical. I'm still not sure who is dead and alive... but at least their faces started sticking with a name a little bit better. On to the next!!
review 2: My sister and I were having a discussion (
... moremore like a debate) as we try to decipher whether or not this is considered a dystopia. But on to more important things! This volume starts out with Eren (as a titan) following through with that plan which was to plug the whole in Wall Rose as well as destroy all of the titans that were in that wall so that the humans would be able to reclaim their land. And as much as they dislike it, the soldiers have decided to use Eren's titan self to their advantage. Even though many of them believe that it was not an ideal type of plan since so many people died. Also, this volume goes back to when Eren and all of the other trainees were first trying to join the military and I kept nearly freaking out at the realization that they are 12! Anyways, you could see that not a whole lot has changed since I'm guessing that this was only a couple of years ago, but I'm still going crazy over how old they are.It was nice to see a little bit of the other characters and how they all differed from each other, but they are not drawn out well enough for you to actually remember their names. And I guess I was supposed to be sad when some of them died, but to be honest I didn't really care. And it was partially because of the fact that they weren't memorable, but it also has to do with the fact that Eren, Mikasa and Armin are the main focus as far as characters are concerned. To see their training was interesting, but it didn't show any developement. I know that they are are still really young and that growth on their part may be minimal but it would have been nice to see the improvement and growth of all of these characters so that you're not sitting their wondering who's gonna kick the bucket first. It sounds cruel, but let's be real. A majority of them are titan chow anyways. There was an intense shift from the past to the present that I had to flip the page several times in order to be sure that none of the pages were missing.Other than Eren having to talk to the Commander as well as Captain Levi, not a whole lot happened in this one. So far, this series is turning out ok but there are still a bunch of things that I would like to understand. I'm not sure what the purpose of bringing up the past if you're not going to show different things about the characters. In reality this could have been much sooner and would've served a much better purpose instead of being randomly throw in here. And what for? There's plenty of stuff currently happening in the present that it's not like there is need to keep readers invested. On the positive note, I really hope the next book or so will pick up and bring us up to speed with the titans. But I'm also starting to believe that I may be let down again. less
