review 1: So, I read this back then in 2012. I didn't want to watch its anime in 2013 because it was so hyped, I just couldn't stand it. Reading my own paperback just now, I have to admit it so many times that this manga is so heart-wrenchingly cruel T^TI read it while I was walking to work and that part when, you know who, died horrendously. I gritted my teeth and just stopped reading for a while. God, it's so cruel. Isayama explained his background, some would grow attached to this character and then he killed your heart.Sasha's hilarious scene feels so far away after that horrifying scene :(
review 2: Unfortunately I watched episode 3 of the ATTACK ON TITAN anime before reading this manga volume. In the manga the Trost Gate arc is interrupted with a flashback on Eren
... more/Mikasa/Armin/et al's training days and introduces all of Eren's fellow trainees who become more-or-less inspired by Eren's will to fight the Titans. In the anime, the story follows a more chronological, and thus less confusing, timeline.I can understand Isayama's decision to keep up the action and fighting scenes and then jump back to a character development scene at a crucial moment -- so we can understand just what a particular character has been through and what he/she is thinking of right as he/she makes a big decision during a fight. ATTACK ON TITAN is a series in the monthly Bessatsu Shonen magazine, so the story needs to be told in interesting increments so readers can keep track of characters and what's going on, but not get bored. Reading as a bound manga volume, especially if you take a break between volumes 3 & 4, can be extremely confusing. So I would recommend reading vol 3 & 4 back-to-back if possible. For me, the training arc isn't especially interesting (Eren struggles balancing in his VME) but it does introduce all of the main characters. And then you get to see the conclusion of the Trost battle that started in volume 3. less
