review 1: Great stuff right a the beginning; Erin's triumph at Wall Rose and an awesome show off strength as he carries the boulder. A majority of the volume shows the training camp Erin and the others went through before the current time period in the manga. So many great scenes: Sasha eating her potatoe, Jean and Erin butting heads, Annie kicking Erin's ass during combat training and so much more. The story really asks the question why become a soldier in this universe. I think Erin and Jean are two perfect examples to answer this question. Erin wants to train so he can fight the Titans, while Jean wants to train to get away from them and live in the interior. At the end of training and after their first battle against the Titans many of the recruits feel that they must fight back... more thanks to the determination and example set forth by Erin. Jean is a prime example of this change of heart. I really like this change of character in him.
review 2: Solid expansion on characters, arresting panel layouts (a certain slumped figure will haunt me, as well as "Titan Vomit", NOT just for blood n' guts, but for that good, old-fashioned gut-twisting sick-to-my-stomach feeling of hopelessness and senselessness that makes you /feel something emotionally/ because of what you have seen, which is high praise from me), and high stakes as usual. Upset I have to wait a bit for the next book because they're all checked out at work. less

The flashbacks were really boring. Only the present-day parts were interesting.
