review 1: I really wanted to like this book. The author clearly know his history, and the details are nicely done. I had no problem rooting for the main character, and liking most of his retimue. Unfortunately, I kept getting jarred out of the story by sudden transitions or confusing sentences or other things that it seems to me should have been caught in a final edit. ... I would put it down, and try again later, but ... eventually I quit
review 2: rating: 3/5 The first half was slow. Oh so very slow. I get that it was a set-up for the rest of the novel (series?) and came along with all the cultural explanations of the vastly culturally diverse Roman empire of the period. But still, damn, I was bored. It also took me a long time to actually come to care about the charact
... moreers. I was slow to warm up to Ballista, Maximus, Demitrios, Mamura, and others. However, half-way through the book, the siege occurred, action started to pick up, and, once the cultural info dumps were over, the characters started to shine through. I started to care about them and the outcome of the siege. I will read the sequel eventually, now that I've come to know the characters and like them, I hope the sequel will pick up at the pace it left off with and a new story rivaling the second half of this one. less
