review 1: Perhaps a better way to sum up this book would be "At the farthest ends of the Roman Empire, a newly appointed governor must bolster the defenses of a city facing an enemy greater than ever known. But the enemy gathers inside the walls as well as without, and when the governor's predecessor is found murdered he must root out the corruption from within before it is too late." Or something like that.As with so many series books, the challenge of the publisher and author to provide a good synopsis is often dwarfed by the blurbs trying to proclaim the legitimacy of the author. "Fire in the East" is written by a world expert for his chosen time period and culture; the descriptions, use of Latin/Greek, and overall setting is as real as if the reader tread the dusty cobblestones ... moreof Arete. I must admit that Dr. Sidebottom at times employs *way* too much telling, especially during "it's about to happen!" moments. Narrative like "Ballista was (adjective). He was (adjective), and he could not help it because (tell direct). Or, a liberal sample of adverbs. "He said coyly/demurely/angrily..."."All of the above criticism is completely forgivable for the reader who wants to immerse in a well rendered ancient setting, along with a truly fascinating story, interesting group of characters, and careful creation of multiple subplots that I look forward to seeing resolved as the series goes on. I just hope Dr. Sidebottom spends a few more moments with his character-thinking-to-self passages as he does with his combat...those scenes are active verb, move STRAIGHT alone beautiful.
review 2: Um conto sobre um guerreiro germânico(anglo) chamado Balista que se torna oficial no exército do império romano. Após criar uma reputação de bom defensor de cidades sitiadas ele é enviado como Dux para defender uma cidade que está prestes a ser sitiada pelos sassanides.O velho conflito do oriente versus ocidente, contada a partir de uma era onde o oeste decadente cada vez mais é ameaçado por um oriente ascendente.Toda a estória gira em torno do sítio, e, apesar de acompanhar de perto Balista não é narrado em primeira pessoa. Não que isso fosse mudar muito a experiência, já que há poucos desenvolvimentos nos personagens secundários.O autor escreve bem mas aparentemente quis diminuir o foco nas pessoas e alargar nas estratégias, nos costumes e fatos históricos em geral. Alguns momentos parecem ser uma narração hiper detalhada de uma partida de Total War, outros com um documentário do History Channel. Isso não é necessariamente ruim. Qualquer pessoa que aprecie ficções históricas ou fantasias deveria ler pelo menos um livro deste tipo para ter uma visão clara de como era a guerra no mundo antigo, e para estes recomendo este livro. Apesar de não focar nas personagens o autor consegue descrever cenas e diálogos sem dar aquela sensação de vergonha alheia como acontece nos livros do Jack Campbell e também criar pequenas subtramas bem realizadas.No geral gostei da leitura e provavelmente vou ler os próximos livros da série. less
