review 1: Did the Romans ever have peace when they ruled an Empire? I feel like it's not really worth having if you spend your entire time fighting to keep it. So many people killed, just for bits of land! Jeeze! This book started off amazing and I was all like yeah, this is the best in the series. But then I got to the middle and I don't know if it was the book or if it was because I was reading it while I was tired but I just got very muddled and disinterested. It picked up towards the end though and made for a good ending. I don't have anymore books left in this series and I'm not going to go out of my way to find the next one.
review 2: You have to hand it to Harry Sidebottom. The man is an academic through & through, but he is getting better and better at this writi
... moreng stuff. I love the way he sneakily slips the reader some factual tidbit about the number of stripes on a toga, for instance, before going back to the usual stabbing, gut-spilling, bowel-emptying narrative. This is the third book in the Warrior of Rome series about Ballista, the German hostage who has become a Roman military leader at a time when the Romans are flipping through emperors faster than a professional gambler can shuffle a deck of cards. Mr. Sidebottom is getting better and better as he goes along, and this is the best paced book in the series so far. He even slips the odd joke in. Mr. Sidebottom is definitely not in a class with Mary Renault, but this is pleasantly enjoyable historical drama nonetheless. less
