review 1: I'm not sure what to write as a fair review of this novel. I didn't enjoy it very much. But that is possibly unfair, because I kept reading, and wanted to know what was going to happen. The book was well written, easy to follow, but I found the only characters I actually felt connected to were Claire and Charm - Claire much more than Charm. Perhaps the connections were obvious...I am a mother and I have a special gift of enjoying palliative care. Claire was a grateful Mum and Charm was caring for her dying step-father. But even though I felt connected to these characters, and was curious to know the outcome, I didn't really CARE too much. Sad but true. I find other authors, notably Maeve Binchy and Stephen King, really make me love their characters, so that I miss them whe... moren I finish a book. But Heather Gudenkauf, although clearly talented and a good story teller, just doesn't write characters who enthrall me and become my friends. An interesting story, but I won't be reading this author again.
review 2: I enjoyed the audio version of this novel. The readers did a great job presenting the characters, who were quite complex. The story unfolds in the memories and voices of the four female characters and you learn about their shared connection to a young boy. The "true" story about this child is not fully revealed until the reader is well into the book. The narrator shifts and timing suited the story well. less

A great read, though wildly heart retching and devastating

A bit of a soap opera, but kept me entranced.
