review 1: The Water Rat of Wanchai was an interesting and fast moving read. It maintained my interest except for the spelling errors that I would have expected to be corrected in the 2014 edition. Ava Lee is an intelligent, strong, beautiful woman who is a "forensic accountant". That is, she tracks and collects money for clients who have been victims. I like Ian Hamilton's writing style but occasionally became distracted by descriptors and stories about the characters that did not add to the story line nor fill out the character of Ava.When he writes about her obsession with instant coffee, her choice in clothes, and the food she eats , it adds to the picture of WHO Ava IS. Overall, An enjoyable book. P.S. to those who feel that describing her choices in clothing as s... moretereotyping women, the character chooses her clothing to present a thoughtful image, a persona for others-- not as narcisstic fulfillment.
review 2: The Water Rat of Wanchai by Ian Hamilton is a mystery-thriller about Ava Lee, a forensic accountant, whose job is to find track down money that has gone missing and return it to its rightful owner. I’ve read quite a few mysteries/thrillers with a female lead character, and a common problem is that when a male author writes a female character, she ends up sounding more like a man than a woman. Male authors turn her into a fantasy woman who likes beer and sports and hates anything remotely feminine. It simply doesn’t ring true. That being said, Hamilton has created a female character that is much better than others I’ve come across. Ava is a lesbian who works in a male dominated industry which can explain away some of her more masculine qualities. However, she has a sensitive side, shows empathy, and is fashion conscious. I really enjoyed her as a character.Having Ava be a forensic accountant rather than a PI or cop made for a very interesting story. A mystery that doesn’t involve violence of some kind is not the norm. I loved the idea of Ava tracking down money for powerful people without there having to be any murders, rapes, or assaults (well, not too many assaults). Though she’s well trained in martial arts, she prefers to use her brain over brawn. That makes this story stand out from others in its genre. The only issue I has with the story is that, at first, everything seemed to go Ava’s way. She didn’t run into too much conflict which defeats the purpose of a story. However, about 2/3s of the way in, Ava experiences extreme conflicts. That is where the story really picks up for me.This was a fast read, but I take comfort in the fact that there will be more Ava Lee stories to come. I recommend it to all mystery fans who are looking for something a little different. Also, for those who are interested in forensic accounting, this bit of fiction is right up your alley.I was given a free electronic copy of the title by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. less
