review 1: HAHAHAHA BYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEi'm literally so emotional right now oh my god. I LOVE ANDREA NASH!!!!! I LOVE HER SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!she's so strong and fierce and SO WONDERFUL her friendship with kate is EVERYTHING TO ME her character arc in this book is SO IMPORTANT. she starts this book with almost nothing -- nothing but the solid unwavering support of kate and a steady job, she's lost the love of her life because they both hurt each other too much, she hates herself & what she is & can't face the fact that she's a shapeshifter. by the end of it she's found a family -- GIVE ME ALL THE FOUND FAMILY NARRATIVES, THEY LITERALLY KILL ME I LOVE THEM SO MUCH -- and reunited with her mate the love of her life the person who will be there every day for her no matter what & learned... more to accept herself and what she is and even love herself and the gifts and abilities her heritage give her & also found a surprisingly good & solid friend in roman (who i am apparently rly fond of????? i learn new things every day i had no idea i liked him this much but he showed up & i was like oh!!!!! yes!!!!!!!!) & i literally burst into tears reading the epilogue. like, full on gross sobbing tears of overwhelming joy and happiness. IT WAS TWO GODDAMN PAGES LONG. WHAT THE HECK!!!!!i love the mythology these books use, srsly cool shit, and the final scene was really fucking cool. i'm not so into the shapeshifter courting rituals, tho -- breaking into ur potential love interests house & leaving signs that u were there as proof that ur worthy of courting is creepy, & raphael's aggressive possessiveness in the beginning rubs me WAY the wrong way. andrea one upping him on the pranking game was beautiful though, oh my god.seriously, though, for anyone who needs the warning: this book opens up with vivid memories of the (srsly horrific, holy jesus) andrea suffered as a child, and it's mentioned & described multiple times throughout the course of the book. so be careful & safe reading this if that's a trigger for u.i'm gonna go read the novella & the end of this now, & it's long enough that i will feel absolutely NO SHAME WHATSOEVER for listing it as one of the books for my book challenge.
review 2: GM takes place in the Kate Daniel's world with the same cast of characters. The timeline of the story overlaps the events in the Magic Gifts novella which is included. GM is told from the POV of Andrea Nash, Kate's BFF. Andrea is back from her self imposed, "I gotta find myself" exile and coming to terms with her Beastkin nature. Jim, the Alpha of Clan Cat and Curran's head of security pulls Andrea into a murder investigation since Kate and Curren are occupied with the events happening in Magic Gifts. Andrea's investigation into the murders brings her back into contact with her ex. beau Raphael; who she hasn't seen since their big argument and Andrea hieing off into parts unknown after the battle with Kate's aunt.I like Andrea. Overall I think she's a pretty tough cookie and a decent female lead; but I wasn't on her side with the whole "relationship conflict fiasco". When you add up all the events from the beginning - I kinda side with Raphael and I felt he was the injured party. Still I liked their bantering and I enjoy the humor the authors inject into the story. I liked Andrea's comaraderie with Ascanio. I really like Roman and hope he continues to make an appearance in future installments.Magic Gifts is a short story that seems to set the stage for Magic Rises with regard to Kate's re-involvement in the Mercenary Guild. There are some fun moments between Kate and Ghastek - everyone's favorite Master of the Dead. less

Not my favorite, mainly because I wanted Kate to tell me the story, but still, it was a fun read.
