review 1: Burke had been recommended to me by a lover of New Orleans. I was disappointed to find that this book is set in Montana instead. It was bloody and violent. I found it hard to tell one character from the other - perhaps because I "read" it on CD and it was narrated by one reader who couldn't do much with his voice to change it to impersonate the various characters. I will read another James Lee Burke, making sure first that it is set in New Orleans, and after I have taken a break from the violence.
review 2: I keep telling myself that I'm done with Robicheaux and family and then I do it again. Listened to this one on a cd...it's so well-done, I'm completely immersed in the story and the setting and the characters. I'd definitely recognize any of them if I passed
... more them on the street. I withheld the 5th star because...well, as a sort of protest of the violence and venality...but, I should know better, it's a Robicheaux story. less

Typical James Lee Burke story. Almost gripping but went on too long. As usual great characters.
