review 1: The book takes place in Southern Zolya, a place close to magic but not quite in touch with it. The main character, Kipp Corwin, is only seventeen when he accidently leads his family into disaster and loses everything. He and his seven-year-old sister survive only to become enslaved immigrants to the farm’s owner, a tough master who is also the father of Kipp’s sweetheart, Zalika. Kipp is determined to protect his sister and create a future with Zalika. When they are threatened, he defies death and becomes the magical master of the entrance to the afterlife, a sack. Kipp must travel through past, present, and future to accept death… before it ruins his life. This book has a lot of fun elements: magical abilities, a faraway land, dragons, and an invisible horse. It uses... more these elements of fantasy to address very real, and painful, issues that teens face. I enjoyed the book as a good piece of fiction, but when the imaginary is stripped away it is a very relevant story about a seventeen-year-old, trying to be a man, facing the challenges of an immigrant, enduring the loss of his family, bearing the responsibility of his younger sibling, and aching with love. I think the author did a good job of keeping the setting and characters interesting, but relatable. The plot was at times predictable but kept me hooked. Though I enjoy fantasy, I did sometimes find the fictional names and places difficult.354 Pages, Fiction
review 2: Stealing Death, by Janet Lee CareySeventeen-year-old Kipp loses all of his family except his younger sister in a fire at the start of "Stealing Death." As a result of the tragedy, Kipp is determined to steal the soul sack of the Death, so that he can keep anyone else he loves from dying. But once he manages to steal the sack, Kipp's in for an epic struggle in learning to control it, and overcoming his emotional demons. Carey's fantasy is set in a sort of sub-Saharan Africa, with an unusual twist. The "Pales" are the servants and laborers of the Zolyans, a dark skinned race. A Pale, Kipp longs for the magic powers that some of the Zolyans have, such as the ability to see spirits or dragons. Magic is woven into the novel, through the use of stories. At first glance this book doesn't seem young adult, as Carey's writing is definitely upscale, which would make this a great book for intelligent kids, or those wanting to tackle something a little challenging. I really liked the ending of this book, as I felt it was the perfect way to finish Kipp's story, and Carey pulled it off very nicely. I actually sat for a few minutes with the book after finishing, thinking about the finish. My only complaint is that the middle of the book seemed to drag on a little bit, but other than that, I think it's a great pick, if you're looking for a good, one book fantasy story. 4/5. less

I really liked this book, though I can't imagine anyone being as pig headed as the main character.
