review 1: Crime noir has begun to become popular thanks to HBO's Boardwalk Empire. However, just like Walking Dead, Mad Men, Once Upon a Time and other popular episodic television, the genre seems to stay in the setting that the first hit takes place in. For example, there is a rise of crime noir but these new shows are set in prohibition or depression era America. Scalped, even though the episodic monthly issues stopped awhile ago, is a welcome crime noir epic that has a fresh setting and with characters facing personal, moral and family issues. Scalped is not for the weak of heart, It's main characters are not boy scouts, there is no black and white, right or wrong, good guy bad guy characters. Instead Jason Aaron and RM Guera focus on characters in setting that are unique, moral ... moredilemmas beyond just crime and gangsters, these are stories that are similar to stones skipping on a pond, each action, decision and choice ripple through the story, never repeating but adding new waves into the scene that is life on a reservation, life without many choices and life that is about making a choice and never getting a second chance to choose a different path.Scalped is life on the reservation as The Wire is to life in South Baltimore. There are characters and situations that a reader can relate to and then there are ones that will shock you, pull your heart strings and leave a long lasting impression.I highly recommend this series.
review 2: "Scalped" is quickly becoming the best graphic novel serial I've ever read. Unreal honesty, immense character depth, and humanity at its basest form, this series doesn't pull any punches. Sometimes it's a view of what someone's spirit animal is. Sometimes it's a vicious screw of an FBI agent saying someone gets a pass on murder just because. Sometimes it's the image of a child with fetal alcohol syndrome asking to go for a ride in a car. Whether the story and imagery is simple or profound, the effect is powerful. Whatever page you turn, you're bound to find something that blows your mind and reminds you that 1) life on the reservation is not well, and 2) those who are treated as second-class citizens feel it more than anyone could ever know... less

Excellent plot. Good graphic novel series for anyone who is tired of morons in capes.

This story is truly excellent. In a grimy, gritty, violent way, of course.
