review 1: While this isn't a bad book, I just didn't get too excited about it. I think the problem may be that in an overcrowded genre, this one just didn't stand out that much. The characters, the plot, the world building, all felt like something I've read before. It's a pity, because I really loved this authors previous series. I just didn't get the same feeling for this one as I did for the Sabrina Kane series. I will probably read other books in this series, but they won't be high on my list.
review 2: Kate Prospero is not your average heroine and Dirty Magic is not your average urban fantasy. Leave behind the vampires and weres and welcome to a world filled with alchemists and their potions. The Cauldron is the poverty stricken inner region of Babylon run by 3 maf
... moreia like alchemy covens. It's also where Kate Prospero grew up, the dirty past she left behind she decided to become a cop. "Dirty magic" is a drug like form of potion making/alchemy, and Kate is a recovering addict. She's hated in her office, hated by her old family and old friends, and treated marginally better by her angsty teenage brother. The only person in her corner as she tries to excel at police work and make up for her past is her friend Pen. When a lunatic turned zombie potion addict almost eats Kate alive and forces her to kill him, she is thrown onto a new special squad and into a dangerous cade involving the people and the past she's tried to leave behind. I love Kate, she breaks the rules she doesn't like but clings madly to her decision to not practice magic or allow her brother to. She eschews romantic involvement and trusts no one. She makes mistakes while attempting to right all the wrongs in her home town. Her refusal to use magic becomes a bit redundant and annoying. Danny himself, while a needed character, is exhaustingly annoying. Volos, Gardner, and Morales are my favorite characters, full of strong positions and powerful dialogue. No matter how annoying a character gets, the best thing about this series is its reality, the way it resonates and feels true no matter how much you may not like a character or a story point, you can't doubt that it smacks of honesty and the imperfect way the world and the people in it work. When starting Dirty Magic I never doubted the writing would be incredible, Jaye Wells wowed me with the Sabina Kane series and she doesn't slack off in the Prospero's War series. If anything the writing showcases more of her talent in this grittier setting. The world of Kate Prospero is meticulously built and beautifully described. I will be following this series till its unfortunate but inevitable end. less
