Sabina Kane
review 1: Sabina Kane is an infuriating heroine, her whole damaged psyche is supposed to invoke sympathy but instead it only makes you dislike her. I guess it's hard to like a heroine that doesn't know when to back down, doesn't know what fights to pick and is always arguing. It's also very hard to accept that a trained assassin, supposedly with a kickass reputation, is so bad at fighting, horrible at assessing danger and is always unprepared and underarmed. The plot is not overtly obvious but that's not merit to good writing, it's more result of a lack of interest on the heroine's part. She doesn't investigate, doesn't research, her only reaction is to want to punch something without any direction or information to back her violent desires. Overall it's a silly story that accomplis... morehes very little, I'm not sure if I'll bother to read any further in the series.
review 2: Jaye Wells again does a great job of telling Sabina Kane's continued struggles in "The Mage in Black". Sabina has escaped vampire life and family in California to head to her mage family for education and protection in New York. Things are completely different in this city and she must learn the rules as she goes along while at the same time running into old friends and enemies. This novel is a page-turning enjoyable ride. Wells does a great job of describing the events and placing the reader right in the middle of the action. less
