review 1: This very short novel, published in English as "1914" is a good introduction to the experience of WW1 for the average soldier. It is a quick read and not filled with historical data or reenactments. Is is assumed that we all know these things. In fact at a few different points Echenoz, as the narrator, alludes to the fact that many of these impressions have been recorded elsewhere. Still, it is a good way to remember the familiar WW1 arc than many experienced from hung-ho soldier to disillusioned wounded warrior. If you are looking for a quick way to enter the world of trench warfare, maybe as a remembrance of the 100 anniversary of the start of the war, this is a good piece to read.

Chi sta al fronte e chi rimane a casa, tutti pagano le conseguenze di un conflitto infinito e cruento. Non c'è sollievo per chi sta in trincea come non c'è consolazione per chi attende un ritorno dal fronte. Apparentemente distaccato, il racconto si imprime nella mente del lettore come una scheggia di mortaio. less
