review 1: This was my favorite Cat and Bones book so far! Don't get me wrong, the previous three were good, but man, the ante gets upped so much in "Destined for an Early Grave"! And without spoiling too much, I'd say this book marks a major turning point for our favorite vampire huntress. In "Destined for an Early Grave," Cat is startled to learn that she has a history with vampires that she cannot remember. Also, a vampire husband who came before Bones. This proves to be the ultimate test for Cat and Bones, and they come dangerously close to losing each other forever. There was a lot to like about this book. Some of my favorite bits:1)the usage of Marie Laveau. Being a Louisiana resident, and living an hour away from New Orleans, it's hard not to know and love the resident voodoo ... morequeen of the Crescent City, so it was fun to see her appear here. It was also nice that Cat didn't pull too much of an attitude with her like she has with other figures, but there was more of a cautious respect going on. Also, the author did not waste time explaining "and this is what New Orleans is like" and focus on so much of the touristy gimmick that usually saturates and bogs down stories that feature New Orleans. 2)Gregor. I might be the only one, but I really liked him as a villain. He was dark and oozed sexy villain charisma, and I would have liked to have seen him capture Cat again after things change for her instead of interacting with her in dream sequences. It's a shame that he is a one book character (I think), because he was much more intriguing than the foes that came before. 3)Vlad, or Dracula. Seriously, what's not to love about him? Usually reinterpretations of Dracula tend to, pardon the pun, suck. But here he's just a load of fun. He rankles Bones, he can shoot fire, and he works as a genuine friend to Cat when she needs one the most. Plus, his flirting with her is all in good fun, it's not requited. And Cat really needs someone like that, as does the series as a whole. I'm thrilled that (spoiler) he has his own series that I will be reading in the future. 4)the plot altogether. Normally I don't like love triangles, but this one was done so well, even though Cat was not exactly torn between her love for Bones and going with Gregor. The only reason she does go with him, at one point, is to save everyone's lives. And the stakes are so much higher than really any of the other books, if you ask me. What I did not like:1)Bones. Oh good lord, I wanted to strangle him so many times over throughout the book. He goes borderline Edward Cullen in his attempts to protect Cat from Gregor, to the point where it's hard to fault Cat for taking matters into her own hands and going with Gregor willingly. What he puts Cat through for that one act (which is not her fault since he didn't bother to tell her what his plan was) is highly insulting and unfair, and Cat should have stomped him into the ground a few times for the way he treats her. 2)Cat's behavior in regard to Bones. One minute she's a tough girl in the face of heartbreak over the man she loves being cold to her over something she can't even remember, the next she's being self-deprecating when Bones chews her out for stuff he's caused. It gets a wee bit tiresome. 3)Cat's changes. I am a bit mixed about this. Without spoiling too much, on one hand Cat is somewhat of a Mary Sue in regard to her rebirth, but luckily she's just as flawed at the same time and it's rather refreshing. Just don't let her be the most perfect thing ever and I'll be cool. We don't need no stinkin' Bella Swan behavior here, thank yew. (btw, I hate Twilight. In case you couldn't tell. The Cat and Bones series should be the super-popular series, not Bella and Friends. But that's just me.)So...Cat and Bones have a new world to face after everything goes down in "Destined for an Early Grave." There are more questions to be answered and where the series goes from here with all the changes is going to be fun to see.
review 2: I've read nearly all the Night Huntress novels and loved them! They are very different from some of my other five star novels which are more complex. When I enjoy a reading experience so much that I can't wait to get back to the book, it gets the five stars. I have a wide range of tastes from romance to fantasy to historical fiction. I look for that element of being transported. This series is fun! The 'men' hot and the female lead character spunky, smart, and strong. less
