review 1: This is a brilliant take on the invisible man story and using Griffin, our mysterious bandaged stranger, Lemire alters the perception and focus to reflect the insecurities and fears of the population of a small town rather than focusing on the main character (despite his being absolutely essential to the story). Although this sounds a little backward it actually worked really well and highlighted how situations can escalate because of misconceptions and assumptions rather than fact and actualities. The use of a limited colour palette within the illustrations brought the darker nature of the story even more to life and the little details challenged the reader's own assumptions, including the ending which would be so easy to miss the point of if you aren't paying complete ... moreattention. Thankfully with this story there is no problem keeping engrossed and focused on the story which is compelling from start to finish.
review 2: A solid, understated crime thriller that's better than anything I've read from the main Vertigo Crime line, largely because Jeff Lemire is an excellent storyteller rather than a hired hand "illustrating" someone else's script. While it's not on the same level as his excellent Essex County trilogy, the deliberate pacing and expressive art that were its signatures elevate this familiar story of a man with a secret, on the run, into something a bit more interesting. less
