review 1: I really enjoyed this book – the characters are well drawn and pull you into the story from the outset, the descriptions bring the location alive and the plot moves with a kind of breathless, southern pace. The setting is Columbia County, Arkansas in 1956 and the Moses family are getting ready for their annual get-together. Sam Lake, a Preacher, drives his wife, Willerdee, and the children back to his in-laws farmstead and leaves them there as he progresses on his way to an annual convention of Preachers. Fully expecting to be away from his wife for a week he says goodbye little realising how different the Moses celebrations are going to be on this particular occasion. This story is told from two points of view, the adults and the Lake family children, Swan, Noble and Bi... moreenville. It is their story that monopolises the plot as Swan befriends Blade Ballenger, a slip of a boy who is badly treated by his father, Ras Ballenger. Swan and her two brothers make plans to save Blade from his father only to find themselves in deep water!! Meanwhile the adults argue and dance around each other as the family dynamics are stretched and bent to breaking point. The narrative voice is clearly a southern drawl that’s peppered with the kind of homely wit and humour that we Brits associate with the American south. There are no great belly laughs here, just lots of little chuckles with a few surprises thrown in. And there’s some sadness, a bit of sin and redemption, an awful lot of honesty and some good old-fashioned southern justice. I will be reading more of this author's stories.
review 2: This is a hard one for me to review. The book was very well written with compelling characters and an interesting storyline. It follows the Moses family through a series of tragedies and challenges from which they are able to keep moving forward as they support and strengthen one another and that if you have enough faith, God will provide you the miracles you seek. The main character, Swan, seemed too much like a revival of Scout Finch. It's hard to compare to her. I liked Swan's gumption, though. My biggest complaint of the book is that abundance of swearing. I know it fits well with some of the characters, but it felt like too much for me to give it a higher rating. Also, as a semi-spoiler, there is some graphic violence and abuse of children and animals. less
