review 1: I struggled with a two or three rating, but finally left it at three. It really could have been a four if it hadn't been for the reporter, who changes personalities from one scene to the next, and I'm not talking about the obviously intentional characterization changes one puts into a novel.I'm talking about the aw-shucks Beaver Cleaver guy we see at the beginning, compared to the battle-hardened investigative journalist we see in the very next scene. The book would have been pretty damn good otherwise; it certainly has all the right mix of emotional character attachment, drama, a lot of fresh insight into the criminal niveau of social media...but then here comes the guy. Is he Opie or Elliott Ness? Who knows? I'm wondering if, after the book had been sitting at the publish... moreer's for a year or so, they switched editors at the last minute and the author was forced to shoot out a few quick emails to be cut and pasted in in lieu of character development minutes before the zero hour.At any rate, I will be trying the author again; the saving grace is the rest of the book, which amounts to 98% of the novel. It's also a good study in what can go wrong with just a little bit of an oops.
review 2: This book was hard to read. It is about online predators and Lainey falls victim. The descriptions of characters, events and bodies in story are unnerving. Lainey is an overlooked 13 year old girl her mother and step-father are too busy to be too involved with her. She is a middle child. The family relocated and she is at a new school. She becomes friends with a boy online and thing begin to go down hill. She is Abducted and she is alone. Her disappearance does not get reported for 2 days. Many assume she is a runaway. Then comes Special Agent Bobby Dees. His life isn't perfect either. His daughter disappeared a year earlier and since then his marriage has failed. He realizes that the last person to have contact with Lainey was online. Lainey is the only one who had disappeared. Lots of kids that are not cared for and considered disposable have been taken too. Bobby Dees is desperately racing to find Lainey.Hoffman does a great job pulling the reader into the story. The story explores the depths of online predators and it is a captivating read. less
