review 1: I really liked the first book in the series with the exception of the ending, but that's because I didn't know this was to be a series. Now that I know that and I've read this one, I have say I'm quite unimpressed and kinda bored. The relationship between Sammy and Jake is SLOW. And, really, this book is less about romance and more about helping the women in these families overcome hardships. This is so chick lit in its approach that I started getting bored 30% in and but wanted to see what happened, if anything, with Sammy and Jake, and frankly, it's still unresolved. There is too much inconsequential detail... that chapter with Aunt Kathy and the winery helped to get me to sleep at night because it was SO BORING.I loved the use of symbolism, but that really didn't start... more happening until too far into the book.... did I mention the slow pace of this book?
review 2: I read the first book in the series and thought it was decent. Maybe a bit sappy, certainly with some questionable language and dialogue (in the sense that it's often very dated and sometimes over-the-top), but decent enough that I wanted to see what happened next. So I bought this one.Unfortunately, this one was not a good follow-up. We barely hear about two of the sisters. Sammy, rather than being her own person and going through her own changes, is merely a fairy godmother/wise granny-type to a handful of other characters. This felt like treading water, waiting for things to happen. Not impressive at all.The book also had a number of problems with homophones and words that just didn't seem to make sense in context, like the author or editor wasn't sure what they meant but thought they sounded good. And there were tons of unnecessary paragraph breaks. It really interrupted the flow of the book and often caused confusion over who said what.If there are subsequent books, which I'm guessing there will be after the clunky stopping point, I won't be reading them. less
