review 1: After the phenomenal setting off the first book I expected a bit more than unlocking heads and putting whole books in. Maybe I'm already too old and don't enjoy a kids' joke anymore. Apart from that there are great artworks of getting inside characters' heads which reminded me of an amazing video game Psychonauts. All in all, though riding the edges of cliches (abused as kid, gay couple, runaway husband leaving retarded child...), authors manage to keep the story engaging and intriguing to ensure readers will stay for the next installment.
review 2: Things keep getting worse for the Locke family as the horror takes a more insidious psychological turn. Joe Hill's Locke and Key volume 2 turns the horror up to eleven and spends a lot more time on Tyler's new friend
... more Zack aka The creature from the well...A teacher has been murdered by Zack to maintain his/her cover. Meanwhile Bode finally figures out how to use the new key he found at the end of Volume one. This new key opens not doors but heads! Finally it seems like someone other than Bode is able to begin to understand the strange keys found in there new home as Kinsey and Ty stand witness to Bode opening his own head up. I thought this was really fascinating. Hill shows his versatility yet again with this new key as it is magical and fascinating yet at the same time it is disturbing and dangerous. Once the key is used to open ones head memories can be witnessed through the top of the person's skull. Even the person whose head is open is able to somehow stand outside their own body to look into their head! That's freaking awesome! Imagine what you could do if you could just open your head and drop in a book or a movie, you could learn something in its entirety instantly. For one if I had such a key my "read" bookshelf would be overflowing. That's the magical part. The disturbing part? What happens if someone starts taking stuff out? This becomes the main focus halfway through the story as Zack starts to remove and distort memories to benefit his schemes.I have to admit I was a little disappointed at how much the Locke children took a backseat in this volume but that extra space was filled up with Zack just being plain evil and I loved that! I'm extremely curious to see what's coming up for the Locke family in volume three! Some of Ellie's past with Zack or Dodge? is also explored and you can't help but pity this poor woman. Life has been throwing her horrible curves even before Zack became her biggest problem. Head Games ends with a very fascinating and yet somehow terribly disturbing scene between Zack and Rufus (Ellie's son.) My head is buzzing with possibilities of what was going on. I guess I'll just have to wait and find out! As dark as volume one was I think Head Games takes it even farther. There's not as much murder but there's something terribly disturbing about someone like Zack being able to mess with your head (literally!!!) and change your entire way of thinking! The Locke family are really in over their heads with this enemy considering he knows more about the keys than anyone else in the story so far. All the cards are falling in Zack's favor and things are looking darker by the page for the Locke family. Hill doesn't disappoint with Head Games, bringing all the bloody horror and raw emotion of volume one and then throwing in a good helping of psychological horror just to raise the stakes! Head Games stands as a great example of why I love Hills writing, anyone who's not reading Hill should really think about it because you're missing out! As before Rodriguez's art is fantastic. It's definitely one of the most uniquely drawn comics I've read recently! The art complements Hills words gracefully making Locke and Key a smooth blend of art and writing! I can't praise this series enough! 4.5 out of 5 stars!!! Keep it up Joe! less
