review 2: If you follow the Palestinian struggle- and particularly of that in Gaza- most of these reflections and the horrific stories of peoples' experiences will not come as a shock or as news. However, Sacco's unflagging attempts at recording and almost, witnessing, the stories and pain that people have experienced are u
... morenderpinned by his (self-conscious) humanity, his journalistic integrity, and a strong narrative voice. He shifts between telling us the stories of present day (OK, 2002-2003) Gaza and his experiences in navigating it to uncover the overlooked perspectives,stories- to find the 'footnotes' and shift the positioning so that they tell their own stories, and are not relegated to the margins of it. Having just finished it, I'm still exploring and trying to understand the emotions it has evoked. His sketches are immense- they reflect great detail and sensitivity in how they relay peoples' stories. The panels are wrapped up in gentle humour, kindness, and patience with the refractions of memory. I teared up at several points and I had to put the book away and read something less.. painful, less filled with despair, less anger and helplessness, less destruction.. just, something that was 'less'. I think that speaks to not just Sacco's ability to make that footnote a centrepoint, but his skill as a journalist. This isn't just a graphic novel or a telling of Palestinian stories. It isn't just a piece of stunning journalism. It's an attempt to tell history, to tell history from the footnotes, to tell history so that it can remain even years from now and cannot be refused, cannot be denied, and cannot be forgotten. less
