review 1: As far as preachy books for kids go, this is one of the preachiest I've read in a while. A little boy who defies the laws of gravity is abandoned by his strait-laced parents who have a horror of appearing not 'normal'. This becomes an adventure for the fellow - he travels the world, meets other people who have been ostracised, and brings joy to some and love to others. Barnaby's mother and father have few redeeming characteristics (despite a back-story that tries to explain their hatefulness), and are a truly disturbing vision of parenthood. How will a child reading this book respond to such a betrayal? The question worries me, and I haven't been able to bring myself to read it to my boy, despite the commendable celebration of differences. On the other hand, the boy himsel... moref read it and felt it was a stirring tale of derring-do. The perfidy of authority figures either eluded him or he considered it unimportant. Or, who knows, perhaps he liked the subversion. At any rate, I'm still not a fan.
review 2: Suomeksi Leijuva poika. Kirja suvaitsevaisuudesta ja erilaisuudesta ihanasti kerrottuna, ei liikaa saarnannut tai osoitellut. Maailmaan mahtuu monenlaisia ihmisiä ja tarinoita eikä aina ulkomuoto kerro millainen ihminen on sisimmässään. Päähenkilöllä sattuu olemaan sellainen erikoisuus että hän on syntymästään asti leijunut, eli ei pysy millään maassa. Hänen vanhempansa taas eivät halua mitään muuta kuin tavallisuutta ja katseltuaan leijumista kahdeksan vuotta, he tekevät ratkaisunsa, ja mitäs sitten tapahtui..? Lue kirja niin tiedät :) less
