review 1: Just imagine a young governess trying to care for 2 children while being haunted and driven away by the children's dead mothers spirit. The dead mother wants no one to raise her children. And she has gotten rid of (killed) previous governesses who tried this task. Mix that in with a creepy gothic mansion, a mutilated father, weird children, a imbecile coachman, and you have a delicious ghost story all written in Dickensonian prose.
review 2: I admit to shamelessly attempting to catch up on my Goodreads Reading Challenge (having fallen 6 books behind!)and this is a perfect book to speed through. Oh, and I picked it off the library shelf because of its cover. However, despite my superficial motivations author John Boyne is generally no slouch of a writer. I thin... morek its meant to be derivative of du Maurier, James, and Bronte which I found enjoyable if not fully convincing or terrifying. less
