review 1: While Connolly captures the idiosyncrasies of New England perfectly, I found the myriad of characters difficult to keep straight, and hat interfered with my ability to follow the plot(s). The characters' stories I found intriguing were overshadowed by a myriad of gruesome voyeuristic murder-porn. Granted, this reader came into the series at book 11 and probably needed some necessary background from the preceding books. It felt quite like reading a treatment for a film--in fact, I'll be surprised if if doesn't eventually get made into a movie.
review 2: This is the first book in several years that I could not finish. I was looking forward to reading one of John Connolly's suspense stories, but I guess I picked the wrong one. Very disappointing, to say the least.... more Although there were a few characters who were interesting, most of them I did not care about. There were too many plot threads and it appeared that the author couldn't decide if this was a horror story a la Dean Koontz or a mystery. less
