review 1: So I got a Charlie Parker mystery in mid stream. I have not read others. Like so many of these things, this is another ex cop with dead wife and child. He walks over the line, gets results and gets in trouble with all the official law people. He did not have sex with anybody so that was a little different, but there was suggestions mid way in the story. It was a little bit of a convoluted plot with people rescuing Russian teenagers from prostitute work that never seems to enter into the rest of the story. One of the "major bad guy" for most of the story turns out to be an undercover agent. All kinds of people shooting in the woods and nobody knows who is shooting whom until the next chapter. I can not say exactly why but I never became a fan of Mr. Parker and his gre... moreat passion to find the missing girl. There were parts of this story that were not exactly credible to me. Mr. Connolly liked to have some psychological fun with the vision of a dead girl haunting one of the bad people.I will say that there was one page in this book that I thought was about as good theology as I have read: the three reasons Parker gave for believing in God. I thought that was a very good piece of work.
review 2: Terrific story, and I think I may have a new favorite author!I usually enjoy books that are a bit more sparse in their prose, so I was very pleasantly surprised by John Connolly's writing style. For me it felt almost literary, at least in comparison with the books I've been reading. It was nice to read a style that felt sufficiently intense and moved well, while at the same time utilizing some very rich wording. There is always the risk of feeling overdone when a writer indulges himself this way, but this felt just right. I very much enjoyed the lead-ins to several of the chapters in the way that they'd give me a big-picture setting of the scene, and then smack me in the forehead with the contrasting detail that was really the point all along. I also thought the dialogue between characters was terrific. These were serious people in serious situations, but they were allowed to have sometimes playful conversations that really did make me laugh out loud. I appreciated the depth that was given to these characters, and felt it added greatly to the story. I purchased this book as part of a Kindle Daily Deal, so rather than getting in at the start of the series I started well down the line. I'm sure there is a ton of backstory that would have enhanced this book even more, but I felt it stood well on its own. The story was terrific, and the writing was as well. I can't wait to start at the beginning and take it all in. I definitely recommend this book, and very likely the Charlie Parker series as well. less

A very confusing story. I thought there were too many characters to try and keep straight.
