review 2: As I've said numerous times in Goodreads reviews, JU is my favorite author. I was 43 when I discovered him and have loved reading ever since. Maybe I loved to read before that, but discovering Updike was life-changing. My Goodreads review of my first Updike book "Rabbit Run" has more "likes" than any other of my reviews. This collection of stories spanning five decades of his writing is testimony to the constancy and consistency of JU's work. All eighteen of these stories could have come out of scenes from one novel.Richard and Joan Maple never had a good marriage, but Updike kept them together. He delivered four children and one grandson. He maintained their marriage despite vicious attacks on one another in a wholly believable style. less

I like Updike. I like his phrasing and his way of serving up bits of his characters.

Found it depressing. This is the first Updike I've read. Are they all depressing?
