review 1: I know everyone seems to really love this book but I found it a bit of a struggle. The story follows Allan, who, on his hundredth birthday decides to make his escape from the old folks home where he currently lives. We then follow his adventures when he steals a suitcase from a gang member and goes on the run. The present day adventures are interspersed with flashbacks of Allan' s earlier life which involved travelling the world and influencing a number of major historical events over the course of the 20th century. For me the story reminded me a lot of Forest Gump with a character who just floated along doing his own thing completely oblivious to what was going on while somehow influencing major events and meeting some of the most important people including President Truman... more, Winston Churchill and Stalin.I have to admit I'm not a fan of Forest Gump so perhaps I had the same problem with this book. I just couldn't really connect with the main character. He just seemed to drift along and showed pretty much no emotion. His only interest was in making sure he had something to eat and some vodka. He would stay somewhere for a bit, meet people and then get bored and move on. He did seem intelligent despite a lack of education but had a slightly dubious moral compass.Overall it was an interesting story but not something that I would be rushing to read again.
review 2: Unfinishable. The plot, such as it is, simply does not appear to go anywhere. The story just drifts along the life of Allen Karlsson, a bumbling psychopathic centenarian who escapes from his nursing home, steals 50 million krona from a criminal gang, then goes on the run with various friends he picks up along the way, leaving a trail of bodies that he dispatches in a bizarre range of ways without a trace of emotion. The plot is unbelievably absurd and gave me no incentive to carry on. It's hard to see what all the fuss about this book is about. less
