review 1: Jonathon Kellerman is best known for his crime mysteries featuring Alex Delaware. In fact, when I checked this book out at the library, I just naturally assumed it was another Alex Delaware novel. Wrong.True Detectives, set in Los Angeles, is another good Kellerman suspense with deep psychological rifts and filled with people each with their own mental tick. Milo Sturgis and Alex Delaware do appear, however they are merely background characters. Dimitri, a Russian living in the United States has done well for himself and he has done so partly from knowing and taking an interest in his employees, their families and their background. He hires successful LAPD-cop-turned-Private Investigator Aaron Fox to explore the disappearance of one of his employees’ daughters, Caitl... morein Frostig. Caitlin is assumed to be dead. There seems no end to the billable hours but Aaron needs to achieve solid results. Thus, Aaron turns to his step brother LAPD detective Moses Reed. They share the same mother and their fathers were friends. The similarities pretty much end there but they are brought together and ultimately depend on each other for this case. It seems ironic that the two characters are brought together by a presumed dead woman who was spiraling out of control.True Detectives ventures into the dark side of L.A.’s night life and turns up a whacky list of suspects, each with their own set of issues. There is the eccentric millionaire movie director whom routinely beats his wife and begins to suspect and hate almost everyone. And his wife wanders through society doing as she pleases. Their children seem to sponge off Daddy and, at least one is a major league doper. There is the hooker who could write her own history, and not a pretty story at that, and she probably knows way too much. Then, there is the one-time high-life, famous actor with a host of psychological problems. This book definitely keeps you guessing as Aaron and Moses delve for the truth. The reader is not quite sure which way to turn to get to the bottom of this case. One definitely does not know exactly what happened as the book proceeds. But, Aaron and Moses keep at it. Aaron wants another satisfied customer in Mr. Dimitri.True Detectives is a good book and I am glad that I read it. I have liked other Kellerman Alex Delaware/Milo Sturgis novels better, though. This book is probably not for everyone, but as I said, it is a good book and if you are a Jonathon Kellerman fan, you will probably want to also read this book.Cam
review 2: I can honestly say that this is not one of Kellerman's best. In this book, the two main characters are family members, Aaron and Moses. Their broken family dynamic is supposed to be a central part of the book, or so I assume, because it was mentioned a lot, but other than making the writing from flowing smoothly, it bogged it down with a bunch of details that really were not necessary. The book was full of little details but very little actual plot. The focus on the clothing just seemed random and distracting. I very quickly got annoyed with both main characters, both acted like spoiled children that I wanted to give a time out too! The plot itself is a twisty tale of misdirection that ends up going so far off track that you keep forgetting what the actual mystery is that needs to be solved. I simply did not enjoy this as much as his other books, it is by far not a good indication of how Kellerman usually writes. less
