review 1: I love Maberry's work and this book has all the high marks you expect. fast paced…thrilling. It also has a number of the his foibles….Deus ex Machina, crying heroes (a lot), to be continued ending, and tortured character histories. The thing I can't forgive is the talking, thinking, driving serial killer zombie. All the zombies have the same zombie shuffle. Not our main baddie…for convenience he is allowed to keep his senses. No explanation. In fact its just as well…case the scientific explanation for the outbreak is filled with impossibilities. Once infected, do you reanimate instantly…after several hours….in minutes? It depends on what is good for the storyline. The chapters filled with a radio announcer (nod to The Fog) keeping us on top of the news is just ... morepadding. Jonathan has written MANY zombie books. This is his weakest book of the lot. Wasted is the neat idea of the dead persons intellect still alive in the zom, bid. The book could have been written from that point of view. At least that would have been fresh. Instead we get The Strain virus creating zombies in PA.
review 2: no no no no no, is there a second book?. I just have to read it, I can't believe it left me hanging. I hate homer and that damn doctor. I love des, billy and JT and his hero ways. I wished he wasn't bitten but he was. I love the whole content of the book. It was different, a compound made by a doctor back then injected into the killer for revenge but instead made the monster more powerful of himself, it got injected to a death role killer and he spread it like wildfire. It wasn't airborne like other books or a spill. But I want the second book now. I can't breathe without knowing what's gonna happen next. Read you won't be disappointed. less
