review 1: I was torn about how to rate this book. On the one hand I went into it with very specific expectations and none of those were met. You see, I had read all of Mr. Stroud's fantastic Bartimaeus books and came into this book with the expectation that something similar would be in store. When I found none of that I was, in a sense, disappointed. So for that reason I wanted to rate the book low. On the other hand when I pushed aside those preconceived expectations I found that I really liked this book. The story moves along at a good pace and the characters are well fleshed out and relatable. It is a good story. It's because of that very reason I had to give it four stars. Don't go into this book expecting a Viking version of Bartimaeus because you will be disappointed... more. But do read this book for the good story that it is.
review 2: seru, world buildingnya bagus dengan kata-kata yang indah. "Sekarang kabut tebal dan dingin. Pendar dari bengkel pandai besi dan lentera-lentera dari jendela pondok menunjukkan cahaya lebih terang daripada sisa sinar matahari di langit. Tercium bau lembab dan pahit tanah di ladang, dan keheningan penantian" ada kejutan tersendiri di akhir kisah yang sedari awal sepertinya sengaja membuat pembaca penasaran.kisah ini menurutku agak berbau Viking-vikingan, or it just me? belum tau banyak soal viking-vikingan tapi begitu membaca ini aku jadi teringat dengan film-film seperti Brave maupun How To Train Your Dragon.Dan..... sepertinya Om Stroud juga terinspirasi dengan kisah Game of Thrones; tembok, makhluk di luar tembok, Halli... ketiga hal itu mengingatkanku pada The Wall, Whitewalker serta Tyrion!!! less
