review 1: Honestly I could read whole libraries just of books about Bartimaeus being himself. Every time I pick up one of these books I fall head-over-heels again for his sarcasm, wit, and love-hate relationships with humans. Give me a million, a billion pages of Bartimaeus insisting he hates humans while risking his life to save that one human in particular that he finds himself begrudgingly drawn to, and I will read every single word.The Ring of Solomon was not as morally complex as the core triology but frankly that's a selling point. It was nice to finish the book with a smile instead of a broken heart! I liked the character of Asmira; I liked getting to see her strength and conviction from both internal and external viewpoints. I enjoyed the plot and the themes of freedom and s... morelavery were interesting. It's not a hugely deep book, but it's a quick enjoyable read, and if you liked the core trilogy I'd unequivocally recommend this book to you. If you haven't read the core trilogy but think you might like to give them a shot, this book isn't a bad starting place. It's set long before the trilogy begins and although you might get more out of some of the references by reading the trilogy first, it doesn't spoiler anything, and it's perfectly comprehensible as a stand-alone story.
review 2: i love love love absolutely love Bartimaeus! I would probably marry him if I could....:-) well that's that, coming to this book in particular, Stroud did not explore the legends of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba as much as I would have liked him to. I was hoping for some out-of-the-world history-legends-laden story..it was to a great extent but then ...fell short of that one zenith level. =P less
