review 1: Gods, I can't even begin to express how much I loved this book.So I read the Bartimaeus trilogy around 7-8 years ago. I remember loving it, and I remember that the writing was incredible. The last book in what came to be known as the Bartimaeus sequence, I read just this last month. And it was such a fresh burst of awesomeness and amazingly written characters and oh so brilliant writing, I wanted more of Jonathan Stroud. And then I find out that this book exists.I was slightly skeptical when I began the book, because sometimes when you love particular books by an author, you don't want to be disappointed by other books by him which may not be as good. But The Screaming Staircase exceeded all my expectations. The three protagonists, Anthony Lockwood, George Cubbins, and our ... morenarrator Lucy Carlyle are all beautifully written and instantly lovable character, with enough mystery in their life stories to keep you coming back for more. This book is supposed to be middle grade, aimed at kids between the ages of 9-12, but there were actually parts where I was creeped out enough to sleep with the lights on. The sass and humour are well placed and timed perfectly to actually make you laugh out loud. The story is clear from the synopsis, though it doesn't give much away, which is good, 'cause the mystery of the story is very well plotted and would keep your noses deep into the book's pages and won't let you go until you've finished it. And then you'll want the next book, immediately, and thankfully it is available in bookstores already . I'm buying it tomorrow, and so should you. All of you.
review 2: It all tied together, but poorly. It didn't seem like there was a major climax, and even the characters weren't developed to the point of my liking. Characters would explain their actions, but it still didn't give you an insight into who they were and what their motivations were. The characters also didn't have great chemistry - they just weren't really a team in my eyes. A little dark and I could see this as being scary to children (I work at a bookstore and we have this in the 9-12 section. I would say it's meant for someone that is a young teen). less
