review 1: Set during a sultry summer of Miami, this languid tale reflects the lethargic effect that hot humid climes have on people living there even for a short time. This is especially true for the entire cast of characters, all of who prance about a bit aimlessly about their sorry lives, talk dreamily and let events decide the next day’s agenda. The story begins when three men in a bar make a bet on who amongst them would bed the single white female sitting all by herself sipping a drink.( it’s so easy, ain’t it ?) One gullible wins it, to his great surprise and needless to say, consternation of the other two ‘pros’. What seems like a ‘wham, bam, thank you ma’am’ case is anything but. The SWF turns out to have dark secrets of her own and proceeds to manipulate th... moree three men to her own sinister ends. Many things don’t go as planned (surprise!) and the tale proceeds rather swiftly towards the end to a predictable climax. Thrust into this narrative are some detours- a few relevant and most pointless-that attempt to put flesh around the character’s hollow lives but largely fail. As a story, The Wild Zone is perfect material for a B grade Hollywood thriller, but if Ms. Fielding’s larger aim was to depict the hollowness of big-city existence, the emotional disconnect that it engenders and the pointlessness of it all, then she is spot on. The Wild Zone is then, in effect a metaphor for the anguished cry of battered souls who seek an escape from their humdrum lives into a more meaningful and adventurous existence.
review 2: Before saying anything else, I will say that I have never disliked a Joy Fielding book. They are easy reads and keep you interested. The premise of this one certainly had my hopes up. However, it seemed a little that the author didn't really know where to go from the initial plot, and the plot just "plotted" along for about 200 pages. In general I like surprise endings, but I am not a sucker for endings that are so surprising you could have never guessed them with the info provided (I won't say more so as to not spoil the ending). Overall, it was a nice, quick read, and I have already started on another Fielding novel :-) less
