review 1: I was attracted to the book by nostalgia for Princeton and curiosity about how Oates would treat the subject since she has been teaching there. I found that when I got into the book, I was put off by the extent to which the supernatural forces drive the plot in a book populated by historical figures. It is a matter of taste, but I like my historical fiction to feel like history. I could not finish it.
review 2: Bizarre and lumbering. I would have given it a 2 star rating except for the fact that I found it a very interesting bit of historical fiction.
