The Secrets of Hadley Green
review 1: I would have enjoyed this book a lot more if the author didn’t spend the first third of it rehashing the first book in the series. I always enjoy when the author gives me reminders of who characters are from previous books but I wasn’t expecting a full synopsis. By the time the story took off I thought it was a bit boring. I didn’t really see any romantic connection between Lily and Tobin. I felt he just wanted her for her looks and she had no choice but to give in to his whims to save her estate. His revenge on Lily was a bit much. I found it unbelievable for him to hold a grudge that long based on what an 8 year old said. I liked Lily as a character because she tried not to let Tobin get the upper hand. I really liked the overall mystery surrounding the jewels and ... moreit wasn’t a surprise as to why Tobin’s father was there the night they were missing. The ending was shocking and because of that I couldn’t wait to read the next in the series!
review 2: While only a child, Lily Boudine testified that she saw Tobin Scott’s father, the wood carver, galloping away from the Ashwood estate. At about the same time, the Ashwood jewels also disappeared and the people of Hadley Green made the obvious connection. Tobin’s father was hanged as a thief and his family reviled. Death claimed the lives of some of his family and cast Tobin’s sister, Charity, into a compromising situation. Tobin struggled to survive, finally finding his way to riches on the high seas. Now, Tobin has returned to Hadley Green a very rich man, but his heart remains cold. He has had years to plot and plan his revenge against Lily Boudine, whose innocent admission damned his father to the gallows! Strange then, that he finds Lily so unaccountably attractive. Perhaps, by ruining Lily’s reputation, his revenge will be all the sweeter. Little did Tobin realize the secret purpose to his father’s visits to the estate and the forbidden love he held for the titled heiress to a fortune.I found Ms. London’s descriptions of Tobin’s thoughts and feelings of revenge especially acute. His horror in witnessing the location of his father’s demise seemed genuine. The development of the relationship between Lily and Tobin also seemed a natural progression from their childhood friendship to a much deeper emotion. A very enjoyable read. less
