review 1: I enjoyed this cozy mystery. The author did her homework about the late 1800's in England---food, medicine, jobs, fashions, traditions, etc. Her characters were quirky and the reader ends up liking them all. Julia Stuart has come up with a pair of great female detective characters: H.H. Princess Alexandrina (AKA Mink) and her faithful large-footed maid, Pooki. I agree that the author seemed rushed at the end but she did pull everything together nicely. I laughed out loud several times at the humorous thoughts and conversations she included in the text.
review 2: The problem with this book is that I do not care about ANY of these characters. I am so bored and so over all of them. And it's not for lack of trying; the fact that the author is trying too hard is a bi
... moreg part of the problem. She cannot let escape a single chance to dream up some "witty" or quirky backstory about a character. If for example, the main character were walking down a crowded street, the author could not simply write "[the main character] walked down a crowded street." Instead, the author would have to relate an "amusing" story about EVERY SINGLE PERSON walking down that street. People that you are never going to hear about again, people that add nothing to the plot, people that you DO NOT CARE ABOUT--unfortunate romances, scatological references, and kinky fetishes for all! Reading this book would be like watching the TV show Gilmore girls if every single character were KIRK. less
